An ikebana textbook from the Meiji era says: “Aspidistra leaves are the first material for practice. If you keep working with them diligently, you will truly understand the shape of Shoka(Traditional Ikebana Style).”
I met an older woman in America who told me she started learning ikebana at a girls’ school, and for three years she only worked with aspidistra leaves.
A certain Professor K told me: “I arranged aspidistra leaves first, and that’s where my up-and-down ikebana life began.”
People of the Ikenobo school practice with aspidistra leaves again and again, drilling the basics into their bodies.
