Tonight in Kyoto, the Gozan no Okuribi (Five Mountain Send-Off Fires) was held.

If you notice these boxes placed around the city, please be aware that they are not trash bins.
They are specially prepared to collect the sacred offerings that families have lovingly made during Obon, a time when spirits are welcomed back from heaven and then respectfully sent off again.

We kindly ask for your understanding and respect for this deeply rooted tradition, which continues to be cherished by the people of Kyoto.
